The Bridge Between Who You Are and Who You Want to Be
Picture a long footbridge in the early morning, mist on both ends. Behind you, a shore you know by heart. Ahead, a shore you have only imagined. And there you stand, somewhere in the middle, belonging fully to neither side.
Most of us know this place well, though we rarely speak of it. It is not the starting line, and it is not the finish. It is the middle ground, where you are no longer who you used to be, but not yet who you hope to become. You have outgrown old patterns, yet the new ones have not fully taken root. You have taken real steps toward your dreams, but the outcome still sits far off in the mist.
I call this place the bridge. And though it feels like an in-between state, I have come to believe it is one of the most important parts of our growth.
Why the Bridge Feels Uncomfortable
The bridge is a place of tension. On one side stands your comfort zone, with its familiar habits, roles, and identities. On the other side stands your desired self, with the goals and values and life you are reaching for.
To cross, you must carry both. The old self that resists change, and the new self that demands it. That tug-of-war can feel heavy.
Sometimes the discomfort arrives as impatience: why am I not there yet? Sometimes as doubt: am I even capable of changing? Sometimes as restlessness: I have done so much, and nothing seems to move. And sometimes as plain fear: what if I never make it across?
The in-between feels strange because it offers no certainty. You cannot fully claim your old self anymore, and you cannot yet embody the new one. It is like standing on ground that shifts beneath you.
But hear this. The bridge is not a mistake. It is where the transformation quietly takes place.
Growth Doesn’t Happen Overnight
We like to imagine change arriving in one bold decision, one dramatic moment. Real growth is slower than that. It unfolds the way a seed breaks through soil, unseen at first, patient always.
The bridge is where you learn, adapt, and stretch into new ways of being. It is where small habits take root. It is where you practise becoming.
Think of a caterpillar inside its cocoon. From the outside, nothing appears to be happening. Inside, everything is changing. The bridge is your cocoon. Messy, uncertain, and absolutely necessary.
The Tension Between Two Selves
While you are on the bridge, you live between two identities. The old self wants safety, routine, and the absence of discomfort. The emerging self urges you toward risk, growth, and the unknown.
This tension is not weakness. It is the surest sign that you are evolving.
Imagine holding both ends of a rope, feeling the pull from each side. The resistance is uncomfortable, yes. But it is the resistance that builds your strength. Without tension, nothing moves forward.
How to Walk the Bridge with Grace
Crossing the bridge does not mean hurrying across it. It means learning to stay present while in motion. A few practices have served me well.
1. Acknowledge where you are. Do not dismiss the in-between as wasted time. Name it. Accept it. Say to yourself: I am on the bridge, and this is part of my journey. That small shift lifts the pressure to arrive, and lets you honour the process instead.
2. Embrace small, invisible progress. On the bridge, progress rarely looks like a great leap. It lives in quiet shifts. Choosing patience where you once snapped. Showing up for yourself where you once quit. Saying no to what no longer serves you. These small moments weave themselves into real change.
3. Release the timeline. We love deadlines because they make us feel in control. But growth seldom keeps a neat schedule. Instead of asking when you will get there, ask who you are becoming along the way. The bridge takes as long as it needs. Trust that.
4. Stay close to your why. When the bridge feels long, your why becomes your anchor. Why did you begin? What truth are you walking toward? Return to it often. It steadies you when the doubts come.
5. Allow yourself to be both. You need not reject the old self to welcome the new one. Every version of you served its purpose. Bring gratitude where shame wants to sit. You are permitted to be a work in progress and a finished thing of worth, both at once.
The Beauty of the In-Between
The bridge is not glamorous. There is no applause on it. No one cheers on the days you quietly choose discipline over distraction, or reflection over avoidance.
Yet the in-between carries its own beauty. It is where resilience is built and character is tested. It is where you learn patience, humility, and trust.
One day you will look back and see that the bridge was never only the path. It was the teacher.
Becoming the Person You Want to Be
Here is the truth of it: you never quite arrive. Step off one bridge, and in time another appears. That is the cycle of growth, and each crossing shapes you a little more.
So if you find yourself restless, doubting, impatient, pause. Breathe. Then remind yourself: you are already on the bridge. You are already moving. You are already becoming.
The bridge between who you are and who you want to be is not merely a passage. It is the place where the becoming happens. And that becoming, I promise you, is worth every step.
